England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Barry competed at a lower division club. Now, he is focused to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression is incredible. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, and he held roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the peak according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, they both test boundaries. The approach involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a pause,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of changes but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To create a system for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information now. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to increase tempo in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to work together again. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
