Italian Consumer Group Slams Ski Pass Price Hikes as Totally Unreasonable

Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as completely unjustified cost hikes for ski passes this winter season, warning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern territories to the ski runs of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is projected to hit €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges during the previous winter.

Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges

Meanwhile, seasonal ski passes will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The cost of renting ski equipment has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes

The consumer association president, leading the consumer protection group, emphasized that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.

"Particularly since inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had raised operational costs for mountain facility managers in 2022, have returned to normal," Melluso noted.

The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.

Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective

Melluso observed a sharp decline in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austria.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, recently stated that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the global competition.

"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a message of peace and conversation... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
