Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The former official declared he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their progress".

The former Harvard president, who once headed Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it understood his choice to resign.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Political Context

This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.

The legislation will then head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he intends to approve the legislation, after modifying his position on the subject following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The communications revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to link Summers to notable world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he said he assumed "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix bonds with the people most important to me".

Professional History

The economist held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He led Harvard from five years and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.

Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
