McLaren Racing Points Finger at Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision
A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
McLaren Formula 1 executives Zak Brown and Stella attributed competitors for the collision between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
The Australian driver, ahead of his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after making contact with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
The collision eliminated both team drivers out of the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.
McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Incident
Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg drove into Oscar and he had no business being where he was."
The team boss Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the chance to race."
"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise fail to act with appropriate caution. Go to the first corner, ensure you don't damage competitors and carry on."
The team suggested that the team principal was referring to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.
Differing Perspectives on the Crash
However, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought Piastri had not shown enough understanding of the risks of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and initially challenged on the outside on the uphill entry to the corner.
But he then cut back in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the way out, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Driver Reactions After the Collision
Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the middle."
Hulkenberg, who had qualified a best qualifying fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the strong performance from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."
"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the contact was unavoidable."
Aftermath and Team Response
The team will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on the weekend.
Stella said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and utilize our performance."
"The points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."
Championship Implications
The race was won by the Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths says - we lost eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some normal racing."
Verstappen said he was approaching the championship race by race.
