The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.
Heads Up: The following details significant events for the second part of the final season.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.
So, What's in the Case?
Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
