The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
